In the 2020/21 school year in 518 regular upper secondary schools 246 638 students attended classes, of which 122 365 girls (49.6%) and 124 273 boys (50.4%). Schools/departments for children with disabilities (39), was attendent by 830 girls (37.6%) and 1 378 boys (62.4%).

61 951 students, nearly equal percentage of girls (49.6%) and boys (50.4%), finished regular upper secondary school. Almost 83.5% of students finished a four-year school (26% high school and 57.5% four-year vocational school). Only 16.4% of students finished a three-year vocational school. Observed by gender, 58.3% of girls finished a four-year vocational school, 31.5% high school and only 10.2% a three-year vocational school. Boys also complete a four-year vocational school in a large percentage (about 56.7%). Boys finish high school in somewhat less percentage than the girls (20.8%), but they finish a three-year vocational school, which leads them to the labour market directly in a much higher percentage than the girl (22.5%).
General secondary education – high school, finished more than the quarter (26%) of all students who completed upper secondary school and almost three quarters completed vocational school. Observed by fields of education, young people usually finish educational profiles from the fields of education “Еconomy, Law and Administration” (12.1%), “Еlectrical Engineering“ (11.4%), “Health Care and Welfare“(9.7%), “Мechanical Engineering and Metal Processing“ (9.2%) and “Тrade, Catering Industry and Tourism“ (8.5%).
Girls usually finished their education for fields of education “Еconomy, Law and Administration” (16.5%), “Health Care and Welfare“ (15%) and “Тrade, Catering Industry and Tourism“ (9.2%), аnd boys “Еlectrical Engineering“ (20.7%), “Мechanical Engineering and Metal Processing“ (15.9%) and “Тrade, Catering Industry and Tourism“ and “Еconomy, Law and Administration” (with 7.9% and 7,6% respectively).
Methodological explanations
Data on upper secondary education are a result of regular annual survey which is conducted at the end of each school year. The data are collected via Upper secondary education statistical questionnaire form (ŠS/K form), and the scope of the survey is full. Secondary education are exercised pursuant to the goals defined by the law. Secondary education activity is conducted in upper secondary school, which can be established as a high school, art, vocational school or combined secondary school. School for students with disabilities conducts education and care for the appropriate occupations of students, attending this school based on the opinion ofinterdepartmental commission for assessment of additional educational, health and social support to students, with parental consent.
The term “student“ implies a regular student. A regular student is person enrolled in school with the purpose of attending classes.
Secondary education is realized under work areas and according to the appropriate fields of education within them.
